Richard Tognetti & Erin Helyard - Beethoven & Mozart Violin Sonatas

In this landmark recording of violin sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven, pianist Erin Helyard’s intimate knowledge of the soundworld of Classical Vienna is paired with the passionate eloquence of Richard Tognetti on violin: two of Australia’s most exciting performers in a double album of chamber music masterworks, including Beethoven’s epic, groundbreaking ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata.

The history of the violin sonata, says Helyard, is rooted in the mating rituals of the 18th-century middle class. Music was one of the few occasions where the two sexes were allowed to intermingle, so the violin sonata offered a rare opportunity for men and women to spend time together.

Both Mozart and Beethoven embraced the expressive potential of the violin sonata, drawing new lyrical and dramatic effects from both instruments. The music also reflects the changing roles of women and men, as the 18th century gave way to the 19th. No longer was the violin part a mere pretext for courtship; no longer was music considered a core accomplishment for ladies and a casual hobby for dilettante gentlemen. In these sonatas we hear the piano and violin renegotiating their roles. With Mozart they arrive on a more equal footing, but with Beethoven the violin is even more dominant.

The highly-charged atmosphere, and the dynamic tension both in the music and the context of the era, is strikingly represented by the album’s artwork – a photograph by Richard Tognetti, depicting a uniquely Australian scene of a beach town just before a thunderstorm. Two figures walk towards the gathering storm, as rain begins to fall on the bitumen and the weatherboard houses. Though a world away from 18th-century Vienna, this image seems to reflect that city’s musical landscape at the time – with the dark, glowering, dramatic cloud of Beethoven looming, poised to change everything.

Richard Tognetti is well known to audiences across Australia and around the world as the leader and Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. His ABC Classic recordings of Bach’s violin works – the solo sonatas and partitas, the sonatas for violin and keyboard, and the violin concertos – won the Best Classical ARIA Award for three years running, and he continues to win international praise for his thrilling interpretations of the iconic works of the Classical masters.

Erin Helyard, recently acclaimed by Limelight magazine as ‘Australia’s most engaging soloist’, is a virtuosic and expressive interpreter of the harpsichord and fortepiano, and an internationally respected scholar, passionate about promoting discourse between musicology and performance. As Artistic Director and co-founder of Pinchgut Opera and the Orchestra of the Antipodes, he has forged new standards of excellence in historically informed performance in Australia. For this recording Erin performs on an exceptional replica of a 1790s piano by Anton Walter – whose instruments were owned and played by both Mozart and Beethoven.

David Greco and Erin Helyard present the first Australian recording of Schubert’s masterpiece on period instrumentsSchubert’s Winterreise is one of the greatest song cycles ever written. Completed shortly before his death at just 33, Schubert’s masterpiece follows a young man spurned by his beloved who then wanders through a frozen landscape in ever-increasing states of existential angst, terror, and paranoia.Erin Helyard and David Greco present a Winterreise that’s different from any you have heard before. This is how the work might have sounded to Schubert, a recording informed by scholarship around 19th-century performance techniques, and the different vocal traditions and pianos that existed then. But far from a dry, academic exercise, David and Erin strip away the stuffy, canonised aura of this famous work, presenting a Winterreise sung by a young man in the full fervour of love and an all-consuming passion. This is a performancethat captures every moment of Schubert’s terror and mortality, a vital and utterly engrossing performance that takes you inside a work you’ve listened to many times before – but never truly heard.TRACKLISTINGFRANZ SCHUBERT 1797–1828 Winterreise (Winter Journey), D9111 Gute Nacht (Good Night)2 Die Wetterfahne (The Weather Vane)3 Gefror’ne Tränen (Frozen Tears)4 Erstarrung (Frozen)5 Der Lindenbaum (The Linden Tree)6 Wasserflut (Deluge)7 Auf dem Flusse (On the Stream)8 Rückblick (Backward Glance)9 Irrlicht (Will o’ the Wisp)10 Rast (Rest)11 Frühlingstraum (A Dream about Spring)12 Einsamkeit (Loneliness)13 Die Post (The Post)14 Der greise Kopf (The Aged Head)15 Die Krähe (The Crow)16 Letzte Hoffnung (Last Hope)17 Im Dorfe (In the Village)18 Der stürmische Morgen (The Stormy Morning)19 Täuschung (Illusion)20 Der Wegweiser (The Signpost)21 Das Wirtshaus (The Inn)22 Mut! HALFWAY have previously recorded with renowned producers Robert Forster (The Go-Betweens), Peter Jesperson (The Replacements) andMark Nevers (Lampchop). With a long history in the local and national music scene, fans can look forward to an album packed with tracks that are broadly universal yet remain devastatingly personal; the album is a story of big dreams, conflict, addiction and disappointment with the narrative using central characters which are real people from Rockhampton in the 60’s, 70s, 80s.  Previous albums ‘Any Old Love’ (2014) and ‘The Golden Halfway Record’ (2016) both received 5 star reviews in national press, an AIR Award for Country album of the year (2015) and received a nomination for an APRA award and won three QMA awards including Song of the year in 2015 for the song Dulcify from the album ‘Any Old Love’. Halfway describe themselves: “The band is like a face, showing all the stuff that the years have piled on. One day you’re just a kid, screaming around in the summer dark, and then you do what you do, roads less travelled or waking up in the ditch, but keeping on.Then every now and then, in the midst of it all, you look in the mirror and it’s all there. These albums are like those mirror moments.
